An analytic study of Bondi–Hoyle–Lyttleton accretion I. Stationary flows

چکیده
We prove that the sonic surface of axisymmetric meridional stationary flows is always attached to the accretor, however small, if the adiabatic index of the gas is = 5=3. Using local expansions near a point-like accretor, we extend Bondi’s classification of spherically symmetric flows to axisymmetric flows, introducing the possibility of angular sectors reached by no flow lines, and singular directions of infinite mass flux, in addition to the angular regions of subsonic and supersonic accretion. For < 5=3, we show the impossibility of subsonic accretion onto a point–like accretor when the entropy of the flow is not uniform. The special case = 5=3 is treated separately. We analyse the influence of the adiabatic index and Mach number of the flow at infinity on the mass accretion rate of shocked spherical flows. We propose an interpolation formula for the mass accretion rate of axisymmetric flows as a function of the Mach number and the adiabatic index, in the range 9=7 < < 5=3.

An analytic study of Bondi – Hoyle – Lyttleton accretion
We prove that the sonic surface of axi-symmetric meridional stationary flows is always attached to the accretor, however small, if the adiabatic index of the gas is γ = 5/3. متن کاملHigh Mach-number Bondi–Hoyle–Lyttleton flow around a small accretor
In this paper, we discuss a two-dimensional numerical study of isothermal high Mach number Bondi– Hoyle–Lyttleton flow around a small accretor. The flow is found to be unstable at high Mach numbers, with the instability appearing even for a larger accretor. The instability appears to be the unstable radial mode of the accretion column predicted by earlier analytic work.
متن کاملA Review of Bondi–Hoyle–Lyttleton Accretion
If a point mass moves through a uniform gas cloud, at what rate does it accrete material? This is the question studied by Bondi, Hoyle and Lyttleton. This paper draws together the work performed in this area since the problem was first studied. Time has shown that, despite the simplifications made, Bondi, Hoyle and Lyttleton made quite accurate predictions for the accretion rate. Bondi–Hoyle–Ly...
متن کاملEntropic-acoustic instability in shocked accretion flows
A new instability mechanism is described in accretion flows where the gas is accelerated from a stationary shock to a sonic surface. The instability is based on a cycle of acoustic and entropic waves in this subsonic region of the flow. When advected adiabatically inward, entropy perturbations trigger acoustic waves propagating outward. If a shock is present at the outer boundary, acoustic wave...
متن کاملAn analytic study of Bondi–Hoyle–Lyttleton accretion II. Local stability analysis
The adiabatic shock produced by a compact object moving supersonically relative to a gas with uniform entropy and no vorticity is a source of entropy gradients and vorticity. We investigate these analytically. The non–axisymmetric Rayleigh– Taylor and axisymmetric Kelvin–Helmholtz linear instabilities are potential sources of destabilization of the subsonic accretion flow after the shock. A loc...
